A responsive website and companion app revamp that also launched two entirely new features — 'live auction' and 'online auction' — to help Poly Auction enter the online digital auction market.
This was a short-term freelance engagement requiring the entire design process (a responsive website and a mobile app) within two months. Beyond visuals and branding, I also designed the underlying data structure and the new user flow for the live and online auction features. Given the timeline, we split work into two parallel tracks (visual design and competitor research/user flow) running simultaneously rather than sequentially.
We developed two initial directions: an innovative one using bold color contrast to grab attention, and a conservative one using softer, lighter colors for comfortable readability. We chose the high-contrast direction: a deliberate bet on presenting a modern image to new users, with strong colors also reinforcing clarity and hierarchy. To keep iteration fast under the tight timeline, we built fully adjustable UI components in Figma and ran a competitive analysis across e-commerce sites, streaming platforms, and event platforms to inform the site structure and predicted user flow.
Turning a traditional in-room auction into a credible online experience meant getting three things right: an intuitive bidding process that guides first-time bidders through clear instructions, a design that adapts across desktop website, mobile website, and app so people can participate anywhere, and real-time updates that keep users informed on bid status and auction changes as they happen.
The design language system (consistent color, type, and iconography) was built to hold together across desktop web, mobile web, and app, with layouts that adapt fluidly to screen size and a clear information hierarchy so users could locate and understand key auction details without hunting for them.
The redesigned website launched successfully with an overwhelmingly positive market response, helping Poly Auction establish a firmer presence in the Hong Kong market, scoped and delivered end-to-end in two months.
